Managing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Dementia can be heartbreaking. It’s a difficult time for family members as well the person affected. This is why Memory Care units are growing in popularity. Here’s a little on why Memory Care facilities are so important.

What is Memory Care?

Memory care units, which are still a relatively new option of care, are a form of senior living which provides long-term, intensive, specialized care to seniors with Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Over the next few decades, the need for quality memory care is expected to rise sharply: projections from the World Alzheimer Report and the RAND Corporation estimate that the number of people with dementia and Alzheimer’s will more than double by the year 2040.

Why the surge? A large number of baby boomers are expected to create a demand for people needing this type of support and treatment as they age. Luckily, more facilities are recognizing the needs of patients experiencing memory related conditions and Memory Care Units, like ours, are becoming more common. However many still wonder what memory care really means when it comes to our own loved ones?

Here are a few facts you need to know about memory care:

Memory Care is More Comprehensive

When comparing memory care to long term care, we see that there is a big difference. Long term care, often called Skilled Nursing Care, provides seniors with personal care support, such as meals, help with activities of daily living like dressing, and services like dispensing and managing medication. In a survey from the Administration on Aging, the costs of memory care may be more, but this is because they are more comprehensive. The average cost of memory care in the United States is about $5,000 for a single resident, but Memory Care Units go quite a bit further to provide care for those with Alzheimer’s or other conditions that affect the mind. This includes providing 24-hour supervised care and a safe and secure space.

Memory Care Communities are Specifically Designed

Memory Care Units create an environment that is not only secure but specially designed by experts to reduce the risk of danger that is associated with wandering. Since this is a common concern for loved ones, Memory Care units are designed to allow patients walk around and explore the space without the threat of wandering outside the facility and becoming lost or injured. A bonus to creating a safe environment like this is that it also encourages all residents to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.
